Could you make a video about the idea of the sound that old instruments do and why some people buy a 1950 guitar or burry drums cymbals, things like that. I truly don't know if my examples fit in the same line of thought. But thanks anyway for the attention
Hello Adam, I’m hearing a lot these times talking about « partimento » « solfeggio »especially by authors like Gjerdingen, Sanguinetti. What do you think about all of that ? And should classical musicians gave up their new theoretical trainings to come back to old partimento tradition ?
Just wanted to throw this video at you in case you haven't seen it. I know it's probably old hat to say that Chris Coleman is fun to watch, but this video says that better than I ever could. fiworld.info/goon/eKC1033YvYKMp2g/videot.html Thanks for you channel. Peace out and be well.
advance merry christmas adam
@dEadERest he didn't catch the pun
For the next q+a I know you’re not a gear head But I’m thinking about buying a five string bass, any recommendations?
5:36 means why not both in spanish
4:25 bro wtf, you just posted cringe
my boddy is ready
I'm a very mediocre musician, but sometimes the only way i can really understand a time signature of a song or what goes where is through audiation. When I have to create the sounds in my head and place them somewhere in the song is when I finally understand what I was getting wrong in the first place!
i really love to use the... i mean the... key... wait i'm drummer, nevermind
FIworld's gonna strike you for imagining copyrighted music
Wow. Love the video! About audiation: I can do that often so easy. Then often I get songs stuck in my head without having listened to it recently. I just thought about it. And this also brings up lirics I didn't know I knew. This often happens when I hear similar songs. Bow I know that this is audiation. Thanks for someone understanding it!
I have noticed my mind's ear has trouble with repeated sections, like vamps, or when a phrase finishes out in the meter with "filler". I think my brain knows what is filler and literally doesn't store it. Very interesting!
Does Adam like psych rock?
so i hear you saying that a looks red. i don't understand and ask my girl what colour A is. she immediately says "red". what? how? is this some kind of conspirancy?
I'm aphantasic too but my audiation is pretty good as well
Just listened to Rich Kids by Polyphia. Wow thank you! 🌅
What you mean, "try" imagining a song in your mind!? I can't turn the music in my head off... While my mind's _eye_ is at or below average; my mind's ear is constantly on. Unless I'm actively listening to something in the real world or actively thinking about something non-musical, there is usually something playing in my mind, music I know well, music I'm not sure if I've heard before or if it's something my mind makes up, and things I've definitely made myself. I can usually image at least 3 instruments at once like lead guitar/keyboard bass and drums, and when I remember music I know it's almost everything except lyrics (i can never really hear lyrics when hearing music). It's not just an annoying "earworm" as it's what I'm used to and it only gets annoying when my mind gets stuck on one genre for too long, such as the one time my mind kept playing Viennese New year's concert type of music mixed with upbeat military marches for about a week. I can usually just decide to listen to another album though. And if I'm too busy working (I'm a programmer) to coerce my mind into playing something new, I can always stop it by listening to Spotify.
Another way of making spicy chords: try to play normal chords, and fail at pressing the right keys.
Can you play the opening lick of Mario Kart 8 Main Theme? It's bonkers. Actually the entire thing is plain awesome on bass.

I lost my ability to audiate at will in my early 20s and it makes me sad
Wait.... Hearing you describe "audiation"...You mean that's not something that everyone just does all the time naturally? I'm serious. I listen to full albums all the time in my head. That's how I got through school, when I was done with tests and things to prevent boredom. I didn't realize that was a thing that people don't... Normally do? I guess I don't typically get visuals in my brain unless I'm particularly deep asleep and dreaming, but I've always also been a deeply aural learner.
Yeah A is def red. An Am is maroonish.
Yep sometimes when I get really bored I just play my favorite albums in my head... great way to pass about 40 minutes of your time like being stuck in a traffic jam in public commute...
I'm a little bit ashamed that I clicked this so fast because of the Mario Kart lick when most of Adam's videos are so god damn good and filled with actual knowledge delivered in the best possible way and then I'm like "Wow, that sounds awesome. Have to check that out... later when I can concentrate..." :D
can you play "School Daze" ?
But that shirt tho. Mary would be proud
It sounds so hard but now that I saw the sheet music it doesn’t look that hard it just slightly fast
My theory for why Vince Guaraldi used F major a lot: He loved ending with a wistful Fmaj7 #11 13 which is simply all the white keys. You can just play any combination of white keys up and down at the end.
Wiggly air
A do be red tho. But Eb is definitely green. Don't @ me.
Speaking of mistakes and being able to handle them, here's one of my favourites by Øystein Sunde: fiworld.info/goon/eWbJ4IXOx6ONeWw/videot.html at around 7 minutes he discovers that he's singing the wrong refrain, which then the person next to him (Halvdan Sivertsen) teasingly points out, but then Sunde just breaks into a brilliant solo and has a laugh at himself before carrying on after a bit more banter with Sivertsen
play prog on bass and a bassline on guitar
Don't have Instagram so asking here (probs in vain): Any resources to read up on (electric) bass technique? Thanks.
Pianists are all about D flat --- uhm... I dont think so :D
This is the most fever-dream-esque video I’ve ever seen around these parts 🍞
I have pretty strong audiation which sounds cool for composing, but since I grew up mostly playing drums and having a very lacking knowledge of melodic instruments, mostly I just can't figure out precisely what note or chord is in my head without a lot of trial and error...
4:24 Adam Neely presents: One night stand between two jazz musicians
Hot take: Mistakes are just spicy improvisation.
So what I noticed is that I’m decent at letting go of mistakes during live performances, but since we had to record music in our school, and I had the chance to fix mistakes I would actually care more about them, since I could’ve fixed them.
6 string bass hmmm i wonder what else reminds me of htat
The thumbnail looks like a JOJO
The whole "singing while improvising/playing" is because understanding musical intervals and textures with your body is more inmediate than playing an external musical instrument, thus helps you be more expressive.
"Wiggly air"
Yo, that Dingwall was the winner for me personally. That tone is great.
Q for an A: Do you think that gaining an audience by touring like the Dead have is still possible in this day and age?
but you sped up the bass lick, can tell by your right hand. also when you played that short lick before talking, the tone was different
I’m here from Twitter.
You were featured on his Twitter lmao congrats
I've only just discovered your videos in the last week and I gotta say - man it makes me feel stupid that I don't understand half of the things you're saying, it's fantastic. I don't think I'll ever reach a level where I'm nearly as musically intelligent as this, (or competent) but I find it all extremely interesting. I hope you keep doing this and enjoying it, it's great stuff.
I have aphantasia. I didn't know that people actually saw images in their mind until about a year ago. I have no issues with memory. The best way I can describe it is instead of seeing an image I have a description in my mind. Not that I see or hear words, but when I think about how something looks its almost that it feeds a technical description like someone was telling you what something you've never seen looks like.
I have a very overactive mind so I've been able to listen to full albums in my head for years. Didn't know how helpful it would end up being until I started playing bass and doing music stuff in general. It's also just fun to do when you're bored and don't have anything to listen to :)
you live life like a fivetuplet
that christmas bit. i see where you are going from...=D
A bit late, but I sometimes like to compose in very hard keys. I’m composing my first (short) symphony in B Major for one movement.
boddy
bit late, but incessant damn sleighbells mixed way too loud make christmas songs christmassy.
You should make a video explaining these colors!!
Give every kid a digital audio workstation - any recommendations for what to look for? or maybe PC software/freeware?
Why do I watch these... I literally have zero skill when it comes to playing the instruments I own and none of this makes any sense..
Tina Turner apparently once asked bassist Guy Pratt if he could play a certain section "more purple"... maybe she meant a Purplemaj7 :p
Question for your next Q+A : You've made a video about "irrational time signatures", saying that in music "irrational" means "not a power of two". In math "irrational" means you can't make a ratio off of a number, meaning you can not split it in a numerator and a denominator. So does it make any sense in music ? I wonder how sqrt(2) time signature sounds like... Hope it was clear
When transcribing, what general rules do you follow for writing a 9th or a 2nd? Same goes for 11ths and 13th. Also, does anyone have a good resource on why one does not use the 10th 12th or 8th? Thanks
When it's really quiet, I play music in my head and actually hear it but it goes away at the slightest sound in the real world. Is there a word for that? (Besides hallucination)
one of my favourite bands, deftones, is well known for being pretty bad, or at least not that good live. i think in that case it has to do with the effects they use and the venues they play in. i think festivals are generally not great for certain effects
5:36 ¿Por qué no los dos? 🤣🤣 Me meo
(1:34) B fits super well into the hands too.
Strangely I find audiation really easily but I have almost total aphantasia
its having good audiation also indirectly have perfect pitch? I don't have perfect pitch but I have a list of favorite songs that start specific notes so I can kind of have perfect pitch.
3:46 i dont suck at instruments, I just play *very* spicy chords
8:40
Can you play 5 hours of the mario kart lick on bass?
Am I the only one that was astonished that Adam listens to RATM? I need to hear more about this.
2:07 yes i understood nothing except W I D E
yeah, visual memory is terrible. However audio memory is really strong for me.
Was that 7 by Andrew huang playing at the end?
how and when does one submit questions to mr. neely? anyone know how it works?
did you say something like "porque no los dos"? i surely got wrong XD im italian not spanish yknow
8:28 awk tuh byure that's the best I got...
I never knew that exists a word for it "audiation". I use it whenever i have to sing a song and i try to imagine the tempo of the song by "imagining" that song playing in my head before I actually starts to play it. Or whenever im creating a new setlist to play live... So i can come up with the right energy between one song to the other.
On the topic of audiation: Is 'having a song in your head' something like involuntary audiation? I tend to audiate involuntarily a lot, can be really REALLY annoying when I've got the same song in my head for days, sometimes even weeks on end. Any tips on dealing with involuntary audiation?
3:55 i got a whiplash from that spiciness
as if Eb isn't yellow
Does your piano slide out by itself to meet your fingers???!
Did you watch tantacrul's video about sibelius?
How many pings has @Davie504 gotten?
Also Jeffery Epstein didn't kill himself
I don’t have instagram or I would have asked there... any plans to do another video similar to the locrian video? maybe with Messiaen’s modes?
I used audiation when I was in school. I'd always study to the same music (an hour long metalcore mix) then before exams I'd just listen to that music non stop, and keeping it playing in my head during the exam. Definitely helped with exam stress and memory recall.
Is Instagram always the place to ask a question? I want to know what that spacey feeling arpeggiated stuff that sounds like the quintessential 80s is. You know, it's stereotypically a synth but also how the end of Eruption feels, or when Clancy's getting shot through space in The Midnight Gospel, etc. What's that called? What gives it that unique feeling? What does it take to make that work and how do I use it? Bit frustrating that I don't even know enough music theory to know what ask Google to learn for myself.
I think using GarageBand with Apple Loops in middle school was an awesome introduction to production and basic mixing.
"tessituras....whatever they do, I don't know" I feel seen LOL
Hi Adam, long time watcher, but fairly recently starting musician here. I've been practicing guitar recently, and I remember hearing from somewhere (A Rob Scallon video probably) that the nature of a guitar is that its always slightly out of tune. I was wondering if this makes it weird for people who have perfect pitch, to listen to guitar?
What is the piano sliding out every time he goes to play it? Is that a piano feature or a video editing thing?
Question for your next Q+A I want to start learning about jazz and all of it's theory jargon but I don't know where to get started, books? videos? improv? It's great to have so many resources but it's also hard to choose which one will work best, Thank you and your videos are amazing
That audiation bit was indeed an interesting topic! I wonder if people who can audiate really easily are also more prone to having songs stuck in their head. Data point of one, but it happens to me aaaaall the time, and sometimes multiple songs at once.
Por que no los dos?
Another thing worth noting about keeping your wide intervals low is that pitch is logarithmic with respect to frequency. 'Beating' artefacts however, like those you may use to tune your bass/guitar if you haven't got access to a tuner, are linear with respect to frequency. A tight interval where both elements are clearly perceptible when played up top may become a beating, clashy mess if played low because the two fundamentals and their overtones are now bunched up much closer together in terms of linear frequency. Linear effects like beating and tone fusion become less likely to occur the higher you play.
music, language, images, colors... nothing is real, everything is interpretation.
Hello Adam I've been listening to a lot of jazz reharmonisations and I've noticed that the most effective ones manage to introduce a lot of really obvious chromaticism while still managing to feel diatonic. How is this achieved? Whenever I try to reharmonise music, my chromaticism just feels very disjointed and out of key even when applying the usual reharmonisation concepts.
i can listen to music in my head and sometimes i cant pause it
6:45 yea the worst thing is someone posted the worst part of your perf on sm..
If music is just wiggly air, does that mean everything we see is just wiggly light?
Wiggly electric and magnetic fields but yes
Question for your next Q & A: Is there a limit on how different instruments you are able to learn before you just become mediocre on all of them? I'm a saxophonist who is now taking cello lessons which is a lot already but there are still so many other instruments I would love to be able to jam on.
I liked the Dingwall’s sound. But honestly I was surprised by how much I loved the sound of your P-Bass. I guess it’s a classic for a reason.
