  • Everyone, please watch Clint Malarchuk's TED talk. First of all, he's hilarious. Second, he talks openly about how he got through this event and the PTSD that it caused him. It's definitely worth a watch.

  • Not life threatening but my dad told me a story of a man who got hit with a puck, I think this was before they wore helmets, The player then pulls out a loose tooth and told the referee that the other player did this with the puck. That player ended u getting a penalty but it wasn't actually his fault.

    • i did something like that all the time. i played before face shields or cages, so i took a lot of stitches for sticks and pucks to the face, and a couple of broken noses. i could make my nose bleed by just wiggling it a little, so after a guy would get called for two, i would work my magic and then show the ref how it drew blood. the ref upped it to a major every time. it wasn't bush, it was payback. i was a little guy and i was fast. i used to get hammered by big guys and they'd get away with it. this way i could even the pain.

  • When I was 14 I was on track to go to the show. I got my Achilles tendon cut in a tryout and lost so much blood I almost died by the time I got to the hospital. It changed the way I played hockey and my life as I stopped playing all together bevause I was so scared to get hurt like that again. Mad respect for the players that kept it up.

  • I watched the Zednik one live...pretty sure it was 2008. That was some scary stuff: especially how a few liters of blood had already hit the ice *before* his knees did. Malarchuk's story is next-level though. The story didn't end there. Poor bastard was depressed and later shot himself in the head. He survived that too, and is currently 59 years old.

  • I played for 10 years, during a high school game, a kid fell face forward and his feet came flying up. I caught his blade to the neck. I was extremely lucky and it was not deep enough to cut my jugular or carotid artery. I thought his heel hit me until I got on the bench and was bleeding due to the cut. At the time I honestly didn't think much of it and was pissed my coach made me sit the rest of the game. Seeing some of these definitely remind me how lucky I was to have not died that day.

  • The fear in Pronger's eyes is what scared me the most, even though all of these players are ok now. And I knew that the Star had a heart condition but I didn't know he'd gone into v fib on the bench and survived; usually that's only if you're already in medical care.

    MickeyMalloneMickeyMalloneUukausi sitten
    • Shashie21 Fortunately for Peverley, there was an AED right near the bench area that they were able to use; he had already been diagnosed with a fib, which isn't life threatening if controlled, and had an ablation done to correct it or at least offset it. As for whether it truly was v fib, all the articles I've read just say "cardiac event" which doesnt narrow anything down without seeing the EKG.

      MickeyMalloneMickeyMallone28 päivää sitten
    • I told a friend of mine who's a paramedic about Peverley's vfib and he said that I had to be wrong because there's no way Pevs would've survived. People usually don't.

  • I played beer league hockey for many years, skates in the air were terrifying having seen these clips before. That and guys with anger issues out to hurt someone, it's so easy to do kill a guy with a puck, stick, skate, or speed, watch your ass.

    Josh MardenJosh MardenUukausi sitten
    • @Fred Farkle yeah beer league is ridiculous sometimes, it's no contact, but I've been punched in the throat, baseball bat swings at my head, just for skating by and taking the puck off a guy. It's funny how easily some guys get pissed off.

      Josh MardenJosh Marden11 päivää sitten
    • i had been a real hockey player and i had my big moments, so i didn't take beer league hockey nearly as seriously as a lot of these wannabe guys. i quit when i saw the ref get cut for stitches. those clowns had no idea how to control their sticks and they were all pissed off.
