  • 6:36 In this case, there really isnt a facepalm. Both of them are right, but the one on the bottom's point isn't really right. Assault Rifles are not a thing. They are not a kind of rifle, it was a term after somebody heard "AR" and didn't know it stood for Automatic Rifle. Running shoes are named that because they are designed for you to run in them. The only point of running shoes was for them to be comfy while running in them. Automatic Rifles on the other hand, are not designed specifically for assault, they are Rifles designed for all kinds of situations. Home Defense, Assaults (Which is one of the many reasons ARs exist) Base defense, hobby, etc.

    Danielle StrykerDanielle Stryker14 päivää sitten
    • @Kartoffelkamm They need a detailed medical evaluation that consists of many exams, tests, and safety precautions. They even have a test for mental health. The highest rate of major complications is at 1.6%. For comparison, the risk of death from a minor and common surgery like an appendectomy is 4% and serious complications happen 24.9% of the time. That's nearly 16X higher than with this surgery. I really recommend you look more into the surgery itself because it is not in the least but close to how you describe it. Your fears are entirely unrealistic and your description is brutal and incorrect. The idea that someone asking why you turned it off being a reason to keep your child from hearing is insane. And it doesn't even make sense because even if that were a problem, which it is not, they same thing would happen having to "explain" why you don't have the implant. Being deaf means someone is probably going to ask you a question about it at some point in your life, having an implant does not make the "risk" for that any higher. And people would have to know they have the implant to ask anything. And you're assuming people wouldn't want to be asked. Maybe this kid wants to be asked about it. He can spread awareness and lessen public ignorance on the issue. I'm Jewish, that's in the minority in many places and a lot of people know very little about it. I get asked questions about it all the time. I love it. I love being about to teach people about it. It's something that makes me happy. Even when it's insane stuff, if it's being asked honestly, I'm happy to do so. One couple asked my mom wear her horns were. They weren't trying to be assholes, they legitimately thought all Jews had horns. So, you're assuming being asked questions is a bad thing. And even if it was, that comes with being "different" then the majority in some way. He's deaf, there will be questions, implant or not. The health risks you keep talking about are so very minor and each patient is clearly and intensively screened to make sure it's super safe for them. My sister had her appendix out at 8, that was FAR more of a risk, and that could even kill someone. I had my gallbladder out at 15. I didn't need out to live. I wouldn't have died if I left it. But my quality of life was far better with the surgery. Besides it having risk of death, the chance of a major complication is at 13.1%. These implants are FAR safer and deemed an extremely safe surgery by every major medical group in the world. All of them. Waiting for a child to decide would leave them with significantly more challenges in life, possible mental health issues, and likely an educational delay. They are giving their child the chance to not be disabled. Having to live a childhood with a disability is cruel. And at what age can they choose? A 6 year old cannot understand the risks of surgery. Should they finish high school without the ability to hear? It's literally the exact same thing anti-vaxxers say. Waiting until the kid can choose comes with SIGNIFICANT risks. Again, giving them the CHOICE is a good thing. It's not taking ANYTHING from the child, it's GIVING them the option. If your only point is the risk, it's one of the lowest risks there are of any surgery. It's incredibly safe and your fears are unfounded. Again, I feel you should look into this surgery because you seem to not understand the procedure. Children are not cognitively capable of understanding surgical risks. It's not that they aren't smart, it's that they are not developed enough to do so. I'm working to be a teacher, I study kids, their learning, and their ability to do so. My sister is a doctor and she knows explaining medical issues to people. It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of development. And again, forcing someone to be disabled, instead of safely giving them the option to live either way, is cruel. And that will come with a lifetime of issues. The whole "I was just a kid" thing can be used for literally any medical procedure ever. Emergency surgery, getting a cavity filled, braces, vaccines, so on and so forth. I have family who was born with out the piece of the tongue that makes it not attached to the bottom of his mouth. He got surgery. It wouldn't have killed him, but it would have made his life more complicated and difficult. And in that case, he didn't even have the option to undo it and "turn off" his tongue. Another person in my family was born premature and his esophagus wasn't fully formed. He could live without the surgery to fuse it, he could be on a feeding tube until he was old enough to consent to the procedure that was actually incredibly risky. But it was better for him to have the surgery. This implant is one of thee safest surgeries out there, and delaying it can cause mental and physical issues. The younger the person, the less risk and the better chance it works. They are safer getting it done at a baby then as an adult.

      Danielle StrykerDanielle Stryker11 päivää sitten
    • @Kartoffelkamm Your example makes literally no sense. I mean, it literally could not make any less sense. At all. Even a little. That's not comparable and has no bearing and anything here. And again, ALL medical procedures come with risk, but you have to think of the benefit. You can get brain damage or die from a vaccine, you can get an infection with braces, you can die from getting your appendix out, but if you have appendicitis, you should have it done. They aren't doing this on people who can hear for shits and giggles. It's a medically beneficial procedure. Also, brain damage is not a risk for the surgery. That's not something that can happen from this. And the "infection" risk is that of the incision. It's the same risk of infection as literally any surgery of any kind. There are many steps to make sure the person is a good candidate, and make sure it's a safe option for them.

      Danielle StrykerDanielle Stryker11 päivää sitten
    • @Danielle Stryker Think about it this way: Let's say you see someone with a blindfold, and they make a lot of noise about not being able to see and expect everyone around them to go out of their way to accommodate them. Even if people just think they expect that. Sure, they can take the blindfold off, but what if there is a reason they don't want to do that? Also, again, a lot of people don't like parents making choices for their kids, especially if the kid can get serious infections and brain damage from those choices. I'm not saying the implant and procedure itself is a bad thing, I'm just saying that, having to constantly focus on hearing, or find an explanation for why they turned the implant off, on top of the health risks, is nothing to be taken lightly. I'd rather have the parents wait until the kid can communicate properly, and then explain the procedure to them and have the child decide whether or not they want it. Children are a lot smarter than many people think, and can definitely make this kind of decision. And if the child later realizes that the implant is too much trouble, they have the "I was a kid and didn't really understand the downsides" excuse.

      KartoffelkammKartoffelkamm11 päivää sitten
    • @Kartoffelkamm If they decide it's too much trouble... they turn it OFF. I feel like you're missing that. I don't know why you think all people are assholes, but most people don't think that about deaf people. And even if they did, it changes nothing. I mean, I, nor anyone I have ever known, have thought such a thing about a deaf person. And again, even if everyone did, it has no meaning here. Saying people shouldn't be given the option to hear in order to spite people who think they should, is insane. How does anyone else's opinion matter? How does it have any bearing? Why should this child have less options in life just because bigots exist? If someone doesn't have the implant, they deal with the same thing, so what's your point? Unless you're suggesting this shouldn't exist as an option for anyone, I cannot imagine what you're trying to say. This is understood and researched. I don't know what you think this is, but people spent decades making this. It's been highly developed and researched. It's existed for decades and I don't know what you think this device is, but it's not dangerous or untested. In fact, they have been surgically putting in these implants, and understood them and made them safe for longer than the polio (opv), measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines have existed. It's safe and it's helped a lot of people for a very long time. And your idea of how they do this surgery is crazy. It's like saying an appendectomy is someone cutting you open and shoving their hands in your body, pulling things out until they find the appendix. It's just not how it's done. Even a little bit. And no one has to explain anything to anyone. And if they don't have the implant, those same people could want it explained why they don't have it. I mean, that just has no point. Again, unless you're saying these shouldn't exist at all and no one should ever have the option to get one, I cannot imagine what it is you're trying to say. No one will think they are doing it for attention. I just, I can't understand your point in any of this. Nothing has changed at all EXCPET, this child now has THE CHOICE to be deaf or to hear. They lost nothing, they have nothing less in their life from this, they only have more options.

      Danielle StrykerDanielle Stryker11 päivää sitten
    • @Danielle Stryker But the problem comes when people decide, for themselves, that the implant is too much trouble for whatever reason. People who don't know much about the implant, other than that it lets deaf people hear, will see a deaf person without the implant and think "Why is he making such a big deal out of this? He can just get the implant and then _my life_ will be easier" which, to me, is a very toxic mindset. This is not about the parents, by the way. It's about classmates, teachers, colleagues and so on, who don't know the downsides of using these implants and think the deaf person is just being a jerk. Also, vaccines are far better understood and researched, and have far fewer risks because they don't drill a hole into your skull and insert a foreign object into it. If someone with this implant realizes that it is too draining, and turn it off, then they'll still have to explain this to a lot of people, and those who don't ask will just think they do it for the attention.

That's why people with weaker immune systems must be careful, cause it can't keep up with a virus or bacteria like it should. If it catches it early, it kills the 3 bacteria or whatever and moves on, no symptoms given.

  • To be clear: to be an assault rifle, the firearm in question has to be capable of doing 3 things: 1) firing rifle-calibre bullets, 2) switching between multiple modes of fire, and 3) one of those modes has to be fully automatic. As far as I know, no rifle in the USA has legally been capable of fully automatic fire since 1934 when that feature was outlawed in civilian firearms, so there hasn't been a single legal assault rifle in the country since before the second world war. Modern-day civilian AR 15s are at best only capable of semi-automatic fire, which means that, despite their cosmetic similarities to military AR 15s (which are assault rifles), they are not assault rifles.
