Green Lantern - How to Fail at Iron Man | Anatomy Of A Failure

360 974 Näkymät

2011's Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds was DC and Warner Brothers' attempt to begin building their own version of the MCU...that just didn't work out: the film became a massive box office flop that nobody liked, a movie that Deadpool has dedicated the majority of his screentime to make fun of. And that's a bit weird considering they took heavy inspiration from MCU's first movie, 2008's Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. So in today's anatomy of a failure, let's compare Green Lantern to Iron Man and Hal Jordan to Tony Stark to see why one movie and character became a massive success and the other the opposite. Here's how to fail at Iron Man.

Green Lantern (2011)
A test pilot embraces his destiny as a cosmic superhero in Casino Royale director Martin Campbell's adaptation of the popular DC Comics series. Ever since he saw his fearless father perish in a tragic aviation mishap, all Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) could think about was flying. Somewhere out in space, a powerful force of evil known as Parallax Iron Man how to turn a villain into the hero green lantern honest trailer everything wrong with green lantern 2011 green lantern watch full movie online free 4k clip hd parallax green lantern box office flop the lone ranger how to build the biggest flop of all time transformers mulan tom cruise green lantern why did green lantern flop deadpool green lantern is spreading fear and destruction; tom cruise green lantern superman man of steel the only hope for defeating Parallax is the Green Lantern Corps, a group of intergalactic warriors powered by the force of will. When legendary Green Lantern Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison) is sent hurtling toward planet Earth after a deadly encounter with Parallax, his ring chooses Hal to continue the fight. The first human ever to receive the honor of becoming a Green Lantern, Hal is viewed with scorn by the league's leader, Sinestro (Mark Strong), who trains him alongside the hulking Kilowog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan). Later, on planet Earth, frail scientist Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) becomes infected with Parallax's evil while performing an autopsy on Abin Sur, and uses his newfound powers to stake claim on Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), Hal's lifelong friend and fellow test pilot.
Iron Man (2008)
From Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures comes Iron Man, an action-packed take on the tale of wealthy philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who develops an invulnerable robotic suit to fight the throes of evil. In addition to being filthy rich, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark is also a genius inventor. When Stark is kidnapped and forced to build a diabolical weapon, he instead uses his intelligence and ingenuity to construct an indestructible suit of armor and escape his captors. Once free, Stark discovers a deadly conspiracy that could destabilize the entire globe, and dons his powerful new suit on a mission to stop the villains and save the world. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars as his secretary, Virginia "Pepper" Potts, while Terrence Howard fills the role of Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, one of Stark's colleagues, whose military background leads him to help in the formation of the suit. Jon Favreau directs, with Marvel movie veterans Avi Arad and Kevin Feige producing.

  • "The ring never makes a mistake" Guess it did

  • Ryan Reynolds is horrifically unfunny!! Its almost like hes trying to looklike a douchebag as a joke, when in reality, and like most of Hollywood, is really just a soulless copy itself.

  • From what I remembered of the original (i think) comic of the green lantern, he was presumed dead after testing a new jet fighter which malfunctioned. The ring brought him to the green lantern planet and he had to fight some old enemy of the green lantern which was sort of an ameba that ate everything and was sealed in golden armor. it ended with the guy coming back to earth and testing the jet fighter, only this time with the help of the ring.

  • There were cool parts of the movie, like Sinestro. Showing Sinestro coming to the realization that fear is a greater force to protect what he loves over will, and choosing to go yellow lantern and becoming the main villain would have been better decision, in my opinion. At least, a better decision than whatever the hell yellow slug man was supposed to be....

    • Also, I am working on my own version of the DCEU, and Green Lantern starts phase 2, and here's how: In my version, Hal goes to his nephew's party because he loves his brother, and thus wants to earn his nephew's respect, but in this timeline, the Justice League has already been formed, and are so iconic that every kid has action figures and stuff. Hal's nephew doesn't seem interested in his uncle because he's so busy that he often comes-off as a stranger, so in Hal's mind, the only thing that will earn his nephew's respect, is if he became a superhero. Soon after the party, Hal meets the alien, and the alien tells him about the lantern corps, and that they've never accepted humans, because of their violent and tyrannical nature, but this alien has seen good in them, and has chosen Hal to prove to them that not all humans are like that. So, Hal tries to learn how to use the ring, maybe Hal could be attacked by random muggers instead of fellow employees, and he uses the ring to fight them off by pure chance. When he is summoned by the Guardians, it's because they sensed the whole thing, and have chosen Sinestro as a mentor, with the reason he agrees being that he always trusted Hal's predecessor. After all that, we have a training montage of Sinestro teaching Hal how to use the ring, and at first he fails, but he eventually is able to use it very well. Maybe during this montage he could be going back and forth between this and his normal life, trying to keep it to not look suspicions because he's not ready to be a superhero just yet. That's all I got so far, may I please have some feedback?

    John SmithJohn SmithUukausi sitten
  • The way the story is told is flawed, but I have to disagree with you on almost every topic. One point is that a protagonist doesn't need to be connected to the antagonist. Ex 1: The ghostbusters have no connection to Zul. Ex 2: Batman has no connection to the Joker in The Dark Knight. A second point is that the protagonist doesn't have to be the one driving the story. Ex: Dave from the movie Dave. Dave is just another guy going through life until the government uses him for a cover-up. He goes with it for much of the movie, but becomes proactive towards the end because he learns to believe that maybe he can make a difference. I'll stop right here to keep my response from becoming an endless rant. I hope my few counter points came across alright.

  • I disliked this movie as a movie fan and as a huge GL fan. -Martin Campbell is a great director. He directed some of my fave films but I think something like GL was outside his comfort zone. -Ryan Reynolds is awesome but was miscast as Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan is cocky and wisecracking but not to Reynolds levels. -The special effects still needed work (from what i remember the were still working on that till the last minute). Though i actually support the light suit. Just needed some tweaking, especially the mask, but other than that it makes perfect sense for GL -Life on Oa is barely explored. There are all these lanterns and all these buildings but you never see any of it -They took the villain Krona and made him into Parallax which gimped both characters. Krona is a way better character than that and Parallax is a way WAY better and cooler character than that -The acting was weird by even great actors like Tim Robbins ugh, i could go on and on and on but it killed me to that point.

  • 16:37 in the defense of the CGI cloud neither does Angra Mainyu. The Angra Mainyu in Fate/Stay Night is an embodiment of all the worlds evil. And doesn't really have a connection to it. Buuut what makes it interesting is the mystery behind it. Since you never ever see Angra Mainyu. The only reason it does what it does is because it's the creation of a long trapped wish. However it does have a sense of self awareness in some way it yearns to live and destroy. What makes Angra Mainyu so interesting in Fate/Stay Night is that he affects so many people's lives without actually making an appearance. The reason Kotomine wants to bring him out is to understand why something that nobody wanted was created and why doesn't it destroy. Which in turn becomes a question I asked for myself. Cause I was curious

  • I liked this film. It dealt with fear, which is a major issue. It dealt with randomness which is an issue for anyone who finds themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Peter Parker gets bit by a spider, Hal gets chosen by a ring. Hal is not connected to his family very well. Guess what, a lot of people aren't; it's an issue. Hal took his plane up too high perhaps as an action against the money/military complex which he found himself a part of- good for him, he gets points for that. He is dealt a blow by destiny and doesn't immediately know how to deal with it. That happens to people, it's relevant. I like that he is chosen because he is without fear except that he ISn't without fear and he has to deal with that. I like Ryan Reynolds. There is a lot of good in this film. Iron Man v. Green Lantern is apples and oranges.

  • also, another thing i want to point out about tony stark's likability vs hal jordon's likability is that even when tony is being a douche and cocky, by default, you understand where it's coming from. even though he was afforded some of his luxuries, the movie drops hints that-albeit, begrudgingly-it's acknowledged that tony, while privileged, has also worked to get to where he is and a lot of what he has. so despite it all, you subconsciously want to root for him because you know that he, at his core, deserves the opportunity to be better. tony's character, inherently, is a character about development and going towards those next steps. he doesn't always make the best decisions or express himself in the clearest of ways, but at the root of it, you know there's something there. in comparison, you don't get that from hal. and honestly, the worst part about it is that hal jordan was created with the same intentions as tony stark. a lot of people compare tony and bruce wayne because, at surface level, there are a lot of similarities-orphaned young, billionaires, 'playboys', etc-but in reality, that's honestly where the deviation begins. in comparison, a lot of the plot points and story devices that were used to establish tony's character in the comics were actually also used for hal. so they really took the character and pretty much ruined what the foundation had laid out. that's not to say that the movie adaption of tony stark is without its issues, but man, they really did my mans hal dirty. (also, they did ryan reynolds super dirty. super talented dude and honestly, his acting wasn't even bad here. the script was just utter pants.)

Hal Jordan accepting the greater responsibility of patrolling his quadrant of space because the Sinestro Corp is on the rise, would've been fine. John Stewart being chosen because Hal Jordan of Earth is missing, and a replacement is necessary to safeguard earth from an immanent threat would be a compelling in medias res narrative with a well known lantern icon. Hal Jordan fighting any color's Lantern Corp scout team, that came in advance of an invasion, would've made for something thrilling, at least. Hal Jordan fighting literally any terrestrial or extraterrestrial criminal organization because he now has the power to investigate crime and arrest villains in ways no normal person could. Any of these off-the-top-of-my-head options would've been better than the "My girlfriend's father's buddy's son led a cgi smoke monster to my front door, so I punched it really hard" mess that we got.
