  • You skimmed over a lot of detail. A cars counter also need A to know how deep into the shoe he is. Having a running total of 10 in the first hand can easily happen but it gives no advantage to the player because that just means there are 10 more low cards than high cards in the remaining 200+ cards. Having the same running total in the end of the shoe makes it much more significant. This is why someone checking the discard often is a sign of card counting. Many people also tap or do similar actions to card counting which is also very easy to detect. But the biggest sign is high variance in play towards the end of the shoe. Consistently betting 5 then betting 200 at the end of the shoe for seemingly no reason is the biggest giveaway.

  • There are other elements to this as well, which can make a big difference for the casino but which are less relevant to the average gambler. For example, post-2008 recession, in order to lure whales in, some casinos were offering a 20% rebate on losses. This made blackjack a game with a natural advantage for the player, the casinos were cognizant of this of course and tolerated it with a view to luring everyone back. Likewise, it's not unheard of for true whales to negotiate their losses (but never their profits)- none other than Donald Trump had this experience with Akio Kashiwaga (inspiration for the Casino character KK Ichikawa). Kashiwaga would play baccarat at $100,000 per hand in 20 hour long binges, eating monkey brain soup and chain smoking as he did. He would lose millions at a time on many occasions, but as Trump said of him, "If he lost $8 million you might get $5 million out of him"; on the flipside, he expected the casinos to pay out in full when he walked away with a profit, and they did. If he was able to negotiate 20% or 30% off his major losses every time, then maybe gambling was profitable for him despite not being an advantage player (iirc you can't advantage play baccarat at all).

  • It is also worth noting the high levels of training the dealers, pit bosses, and servers get specifically to make card counting harder. The dealers deal fast and collect cards faster, they are always moving their hands, and, most importantly, they are obnoxiously friendly...all in the hope that they can distract you just a little bit. Next time your play BJ, notice how the server who takes your drink order will stand directly behind you, forcing you to turn around 180 degrees to place an order or collect your drink. Very clever stuff.

  • A key point left out is that depending on the count, you can change the strategy on when to hit or stay. For example, normally you would stay on a 12 with a dealer 4 (14 estimated), odds are that you could get a 10 value and bust, but greater odds that the dealer would bust. If the deck was very low on high cards, better bet would be to take the hit.

He started to make some profit, then got greedy and wanted to do it full time, meaning that he wanted to get profit per hour greater than his hourly wage (which was already in the $60-ish per hour range pre-tax). Which is to say he made it so completely obvious that he was card counting that he got booted from a few casinos that he played at, heh Moral of the story is that if you do card count, don't get greedy and don't make it obvious

  • when I was younger I've studied blackjack and probabilities in order to win money at the casino. I was 14 they didn't checked for ID's. I was there for 2 hours doing card counting and betting. It was a perfect game. I won about $180 and I noticed that bouncers were staring at me it was time to bail out asap before I run out of luck. So I went to cash out. But they asked for my ID. dam. I said I forgot that I would get it. The bouncers were coming for me at this point so I just run away from the casino and lost the cash. If they knew I was 14 I would get into a lot of troubles. Then I just forget about the idea because it's really a pain in the ass to bet like that. you sit for hours using your head. It's just fucked up. your brain fries. It's not funny after hours of doing the same thing over and over. Also if you get caught you are banned. So I just gave up as many people who try do. So in a way I did win. So much for moral victory they kept my cash lol It was fun while it last

  • The beauty of this game for Casinos isn’t just percentages. It’s a competitive game not community. Players actively try to win only one hand and sabotage another players hand or thinking, “the percentages won’t apply this time.” when people. I hate when play poorly. At 1:50 starts a sped up play by play of an active game. The guy in the first seat with A/X vs 4/? should double as this is the way maximize your winning. The next guy doubles too, then the next and the dealer would bust. But, because this is 3 players and not one player with three hands the house will win most of the time. They have perfectly acceptable plays but, a single player playing all three hands will make different decisions by maximizing profit on all three hands instead of worrying about altering a “winning” hand because it is the only one. Casino will limit your play to one hand eventually if you always play more than one hand or flex your hand count by jumping in and out with single, zero, or multiple hands. This is the single most influential tactic Casinos use in BlackJack to prevent loss. This keeps most players competitive with each other and worried about a single hand forcing them to rely on sing hand percentages rather than a community of players actively trying to win a positive amount of chips each time against a single player. Everything else is based on this principle. Limiting communication between players, limiting hand quantity to players, keeping cards face down with multiple hands, if you don’t bet one round then you gotta wait til end of shoe. I have been told to give up one of my extra hands at the end of a shoe because they closed their other active table and put those players on the table I was playing. I asked if I could play the other table and they told me no it’s closed. I have had casino pit bosses tell the dealer when I get to table, “He can only play one hand.” While other people at table can play more than one hand. I alway say to players who are indecisive about a play, “I can’t tell you what to do but, the book/percentages say to do this but, I would do this because of that because it will be an overall win for the players. But you should do what ever you want, it’s your hand.

  • There are ways for a blackjack card-counter to not only be tolerated, but even encouraged by the House! They all boil down to helping the House, so the table makes more for the House, even if you also make more for yourself. This means you must 1) maximize your information and 2) manage it well. Maximizing information is simple: Sit at the Dealer's right hand, a position called the "Wheel" seat. In each round, by the time your turn arrives, you will have seen more cards than anyone else at the table. This makes sense when you consider that the shoe is shuffled only between rounds, and never in the middle of one. Oh, and never lose your count. No matter how many free drinks you've had. Managing your information is harder, but also simple if viewed as a sequence: 1) When the odds are in your favor, refrain from placing monster bets. This not only pleases the House, but it also keeps other players in the game. Psychologically, big bets tend to make other folks less likely to keep playing. 2) "Keeping other players in the game" means there must be other players at the table! So you must have a full table. Fortunately, the House likes full tables. 3) Tables fill when everyone there is having fun. Since the Dealer is generally quiet, this means you must know how to make a table "fun". I'm good at this. First, I walk the floor right after shift change, looking for two things: 1) The pits with the best Pit Bosses (a subject for another time), and the best tables, no matter what pit they're in (also a subject for another time). Second, after picking my table I work my way to the Wheel seat (if it's not already open) while doing lots of "table talk". Good blackjack table talk is a cross between being a sports commentator, a carnival barker, and a comedian, including lots of self-deprecating humor. When people are laughing and enjoying themselves, they bet more and pay less attention to the game itself. They're there for the entertainment, and you just made yourself part of providing that entertainment. Table management only starts with table talk: You also need to manage who is at the table by "pushing away" those who are sucking the table's energy and/or not betting (yet another subject for another time). About 20% of the time I wind up with a table stacked 3-4 deep with folks watching the action. For me, there is no better feeling than playing such a small stage. However, I also treat it as a responsibility: If the table is having fun, I'm not going to leave just because I'm drunk, tired or broke. Which means I've played past dawn many times. In fact, my favorite days of blackjack ended when, after morning shift change, "my" table was filled with casino employees. Making them happy is my small thanks for the hard work they do. I count cards because I want to stay in the game longer, and I like the challenge. I go to the casino with a bank I expect to leave there, simply as the price of the entertainment. I also get the cheapest room at a casino I like. I'm not rich, so my bank has to last for the entire trip, be it a day, weekend or week: I count cards so I can take the occasional risk, and can afford to do "stupid" things to amuse and entertain the table. When you have a good table, the House takes notice. Suddenly, your free drinks are coming from the top-shelf instead of the well (though this can also happen when you lose money, so pay attention). While the Dealer will always hold your seat for a restroom visit, the Pit Boss may offer to hold it so you can go eat (quickly!). If you are staying at that hotel, your room may get upgraded. On a few occasions, I was moved from a different casino! I always keep my bags packed in my room, just in case this happens. There are other things the House will do to show their appreciation, but you get the idea. Sometimes the magic doesn't happen immediately or quickly. Either you get a "dead" table, or you walk into an empty blackjack floor because of the Million Dollar Poker competition going on at the other end of the casino. It is important not to move on too early. I will sit at the Wheel of an empty table and make minimum bets while chatting up the Dealer and Pit Boss. If I can get them laughing, it acts like a magnet to anyone nearby, and the table is soon filled. It helps to think of blackjack as shared social entertainment, more like craps than than poker. The thrill comes from folks sharing an experience, more than from the cards or bets. Helping make that thrill happen makes the House happy. The House doesn't mind if you get paid while they get paid!

    • Yeah, that attitude, to expect to loose the money in the casino is probably the healthiest, because then you won't bet money, that you can't afford to loose, keeps you away from destructive gambling addiction.

If it's a woman at the table they will talk. 3. make sure they like u and they are having fun...they let u win more. i don't gamble, i don't like to gamble in fact i hate it, but when i have, i have ALWAYS won, that goes for scratch cards, lottery and black jack. • There are several problems with card counting. Your edge is very small, assuming that you get a good count. It is very hard, if not impossible, to win with multiple decks that dilute the count, although I did rather well in the rare casinos that dealt only one deck. You also need to play perfectly and count perfectly, both of which are hard to do, and the casinos are designed to distract you. If the casinos think that you are counting they will pressure you or throw you out. Don't expect the casino to play fair; I am pretty sure that a casino cheated me once. I wrote a computer simulation that showed that the average rate of return is very poor. You just don't have enough of an edge. There are easier and safer ways to make money. I got pretty good at this, but it wasn't worth the effort. The biggest problem, however, is that even with best play you can have very long losing streaks. Just by random chance, you can lose your entire bankroll unless your bankroll is about 100 times your maximum bet. You need very deep pockets, and most people aren't going to walk into a casino with $10,000, nor be willing to risk that much money. Casinos make money on Blackjack because most people don't know how to play it properly. Simple mistakes can be very costly. They also make money because even good players can have long losing streaks that will bankrupt them. The casino has much deeper pockets than you do. Casinos don't think that you are smart enough to beat them. I heard this from a friend who is a dealer. They are more worried about the employees stealing from them than the players.
