    • Hey D'Angelo. I think that it would be a good idea to research the concept of whiteness in and of itself. although you and I might think of "white" people as our friends who present not as of color, the real issue that is being framed here is the concept of whiteness in and of itself. Race ( black, white etc) would not even exist as a social construct without white superiority. ( It was created as a means of separating poor peoples from one another by amplifying physical differentiation) So what this video is trying to make apparent is that because of the existence of the social construct of race as an identifier, as long as it exist ( White, black, etc) White supremacy will always be a bi-product and a main feature of whiteness as a culture.... The problem with this video however is not so much of what is being said...because these are valid opinions and views of whiteness from black people. The problem is that it's directed, and edited by self aware white kids who don't see that this may not be an affective use of their privilege and an affective way to reconcile the history and inseparability of "whiteness" and "white supremacy"

  • Great take! Thanks for calling out the blatant othering that goes on all day that we’re pushed to process. I wish they had taken the opportunity to explore the topics but alas, they did not. If I meet the creators (highly unlikely, but nonetheless), I’d like to ask them what they were hoping to bring forward and see how they responded to a critique such as yours.

  • I don’t understand racism. I mean, a black person can call white people ignorant, liars, killers, theives, thinking there the best, and they get away with it on a public FIworld video, but if a white person said that black people were any of those things, loads of people would call them racist. Of course racism towards black people is a thing, I know, but sometimes I question what’s considered racist and what’s not.

  • As a white person, I'm here to say that unless you are a white person who is ACTIVELY anti-racist and is actively trying to dismantle white supremacy, ... then yes, you are 100% upholding white supremacy "just by existing." Black people are not asking white people to apologize for what our ancestors did, but to actively participate in undoing the systems in place that we still benefit from to this day.

the Auntie Social Networkthe Auntie Social NetworkPäivä sitten
    • Speak for yourself. If you feel you have ancestors who've done something worthy of an apology, that's your business; not "ours". Please don't make the mistake of thinking that white people all share the same ancestors or cultural histories. I think you should better analyse exactly how to orchestrate "undoing the systems", instead of pointing fingers at a race of people for not solving these problems on your behalf. I don't think you will make very much progress if you wait for others to do it for you. Especially if your progress is currently being thwarted by people who aren't even aware of you, and take no action against you, "just by existing".

  • 24:20 that person only said that because they were offended by the video. people talking about blatant racism from a specific race are not generally talking about every single person of that race. they are likely racist if they got offended by it. coming from a white person, the only thing wrong with that video was the way that those people were framed. the things they talked about are real issues, but cut has made it seem as if those people think all white people are racist.

    egguamiegguamiPäivä sitten
  • As a singular white person who doesn’t claim to be correct or represent the perspectives of every white person, I guess I interpreted this video differently at first glance. Because the word “superior” was in the question, I expected a lot of the answers to be about white supremacy rather than all white individuals so I wasn’t pressed about any of these answers. I’ve watched several Keep It 100 videos here and there, and they’re usually edited like this. Some answers are more correct, more eloquent, more emotional, or more humorous than other answers. Cut edits them to highlight certain trends. That’s normally fine if you know that this video contains 100 whole-ass people who are completely unique. But I guess the white people who wrote those comments just don’t think that way. They have no problem conflating all 100 of these people because of their race. They need it spelled out for them which answers are about all white people, which answers are about white supremacy, and which answers are about racist institutions that some white people have built and sustained. So what they take away from this video is “All Black people hate all white people” when that’s just not it. When I first saw the video, I thought Cut was /trying/ to do something good here, and they missed the mark because they didn’t understand how racism functions. After D’Angelo pointed out how much their content has changed in the past year, I think that was a little naive of me. They’re definitely trying to capitalize off of conversations about racism without actually having any of them, and they’re misrepresenting Black people in the process. But here I am talking too much and being obsessed with my pet as usual 🙃

  • Hey, wanted to put this out in the comments, what do y’all think about the boundaries of AAVE? As in, where is the line for cultural appropriation? Because that’s always been confusing to me, obviously if you’re non black but raised in an area in which AAVE is widely used, it will likely be the dialect that you pick up, and so I don’t think that it can be called racist from that perspective, but let me know if y’all disagree. I think most reasonable people can agree that using AAVE when it’s not your natural dialect, especially to convey a stereotype or attitude is definitely racist, but where I think it gets more confusing is with word choice. Some people get very upset when non black people use words like “finna” or other words that come out of hip hop or rap, but I’m not sure where exactly the line is with that, keeping in mind that these are very recently created words and language naturally disperses and diluted by ear. Like if you hear a word that is used in AAVE and repeat it’s use, is that racist or is it just natural dilution of language? I think a big part of my confusion comes from the fact that many of these words are still being created today, but anyways if anyone wants to give input it’d be very appreciated.

  • Actually, as a student of history, I have to slightly disagree on the concept that "white people are superior at imperialism and colonization." Sure, those who propagated it the most happened to be white Europeans, but that's more in the context of geography and the situations which they faced through millennia rather than the people themselves. Note that a lot of empires that arose in Europe and expanded across the world looked to the Roman Empire as the gold standard, which emerged out of Italy. Yet, it's highly ironic that those they idolized that came before happened to be poc; the original Romans and Italians thousands of years ago weren't white, they were tan/olive complexion. And it wasn't because they were poc that they started their conquering sprees throughout the world during that era either. It was because of the circumstances they faced which caused them to adopt that mindset. In their early history, their city was sacked and the Romans nearly wiped out. Having rebuilt from the ashes, they decided that they would have to conquer others so that they will never be subdued again; so that their "eternal city" would never be sacked again and their people pillaged and raped. I think that's a common trend with especially war-like civilizations is that they had reasons to act in such a manners. Though the rising European kingdoms and empires didn't have the exact same motive, they did have equivalent reasons for why they had to militarize so quickly and adapt to technologies for war and conquering, because everyone else in their hemisphere was a rival-a potential enemy that could crush them if they didn't do the same. China, an Asian empire emerged in a similar fashion, beset by civil war and the nomadic steppe raiders to their northern border. They had to militarize and impose their imperialistic will across the region, or else risk the possibility of them being wiped out in turn. Am I saying that it's right what they did? No. But, for the times and the circumstances they faced, they HAD to become the victors, for the risk of becoming the loser was far steeper than they could have imagined. If they lost, then they would be the ones who had their homes torn asunder, pillaged, their families torn away and put into chains to be sold off as slaves. I can kinda see why certain civilizations and, therefore, culture groups developed such a mindset if it meant preventing such things from happening to them. Prepare for war, so that you can live in peace sort of deal.

They take the legitimate thoughts and feelings of black people and misconstrue it to make it seem like very important issues, such as white privilege in America, are on par with arbitrary things like "white people smell funky". They think that they are being "woke" or whatever, but what they are really doing is trying to absolve themselves of their own guilt and virtue signaling while simultaneously hindering equality and causing further division between people.
