  • I got into the book by a classmates in high school. I had just finished Fledgling from Octavia Butler and just getting into vampires I was looking for a new read. I read the book backwards because I got into audiobooks. I listened to them and enjoyed them but I had my own imagination on how the story would go. When it didn't I kept reading because I thought it would get better. I can see why people don't like it but for me I made excuses because since it was fiction I just suspended my disbelief. I still don't mind the books: the first two is my favorite the last two not so much, but all in all the series is just meh for me now.

  • Quick note for you at 12min: yes. Doctors do this all the damned time. I cannot tell you how many times my experiences were dismissed, diminished, and glossed over as hypochondria, blowing things out of proportion, and being a wimp throughout my lifetime... even *before* my body started actively trying to kill me with a still undiagnosed autoimmune issue. This is a very, very,very common experience.

  • Honestly you have a lot more faith in doctors than I do. They constantly tell me that my symptoms are impossible, and it took them over ten years to find out they were actually caused by a neck hernia -_-;

  • Regarding the Cullens wealth, think about it... Yes they are "doctor rich" as you put it and they live like it and they HAVE BEEN for hundreds of years. Therefore they've been upper middle class or so for hundreds of years and they don't spend frivolously and they deliberately avoid drawing attention to themselves ( at least by in universe logic) and they don't have human medical needs to eat through the cash, so even if they're not actively concerned with saving money, just imagine how much "doctor money would acumulate over a few centuries, especially given that if you wait long enough your average household items for previous lifetimes might become historical artifacts/antiques worth a lot more than they started with. Did I overthink this? Yeah probably... Lol

  • Complaint, please do not talk about to page count when referencing how long a book is, page count is an arbitrary number that can be influenced by a number of factors such as page size, font size, margin skips, line length, distance between lines, percentage of the page the words take up, illustrations and maps, and a hundred other factors. For example George R.R Martin's "A Game of Thrones," is Sixty Two pages less than "Breaking Dawn," but has over a *Hundred Thousand* more words.

  • this book is by far the worst of the four, but as a fan of leah clearwater, i did actually enjoy the jacob section of this book because we got more of her pov. there's also a lot of minor characters in this book who get introduced that in the meyer tradition are way more interesting than our protagonists, but other than that, yeah, this book is garbage. it does strike me however, even in the film, how bella is still genuinely and effortlessly happier seeing jacob then her own husband. the scene where he shows up at the wedding is like, the only moment were kristen stewart brakes her monotonous affect in the film.

  • About the doctor not doing research... nah doctors are jerks. They always shut people down especially, but not limited to, women and minorities. Just look at Corpse Husband (youtuber) he spent a year not knowing what was wrong with him because the doctors refused to admit he has fibromyalgia because hes "too young" as if it were impossible because of his age.

  • Okay so this book pisses me off in how it finishes Rosalie's character in particular Rosalie is already always treated as mean, selfish, and evil because... she's blonde, I guess. Which I don't say about everyone but her vampire power is literally supposed to be 'she's extra beautiful' then she's described as being vain and her beauty is never actually used like a power so it comes off like mentioning her looks is just a way to assume she's full of herself. But then you find out more about her and she kinda makes sense. She's angry because she never wanted to be a vampire, she didn't consent to being a vampire, and while she doesn't want to kill herself, if she had the choice she would have rather died a human. It makes sense she'd resent a teenager wanting to commit to watching her loved ones die and never being able to raise kids when Rosalie knows the full weight of what that means and Bella doesn't. But Bella never understands this or gives her any slack. Bella finds out her backstory was that she was gang raped by her fiance and his friends until she was on the brink of death and Bella and the author still treat her like she's just self-centered and mean. Calling Rosalie is seen as a last resort Bella doesn't want to use. It would make perfect sense for Rosalie to be super pro choice and support Bella's choice given her backstory. She initially voted against Bella joining the family because she wished someone had voted no for her, but it comes off like she's saying it because she knows no one else will go against Bella's decision to become a vampire and she wants Bella to think about it. Here, Bella would know full well what's going to happen to her, so Rosalie wanting Bella to have that choice when Rosalie didn't makes sense. Rosalie wanting a woman to have bodily autonomy even though it might mean her death makes sense. Respecting Bella's bodily autonomy over the men in her life makes sense. Wanting Bella to be able to make the same decision she would have, as someone who would have rather died and wanted a family makes sense. But instead of it being a woman defending another woman's right to choose, it's portrayed as Rosalie hovering over Bella waiting for her to die so she can steal her baby Rosalie can't be good, or right, or loving in her own harsh way, she HAS to be evil no matter what character development she gets or how sympathetic she is because... she's blonde, I guess.

  • Tangentially related- what the heck is up with the cover art? I at least sort of get the others- the apple of temptation, a perfect white flower being tainted through with red, the red thread of fate fraying in response to continued stress, but the cover art for Breaking Dawn makes no sense to me.

  • Genuinely just came back to The Dom channel after a long absence. It might just be me but I really loved old The Doom reviews. They were less political and more focused on what he thought of the material as it stands which I loved. His run down of the Sharpe series actually got me into the books. However, now I find that the Dom talks a lot about his political opinions in relation to the source material he reviews and it is really disappointing. I honesty watch videos to escape political opinions and when the Dom comes out about socio-political issues around Twilight saga it just gets tiring. We know the books were written by a traditionalist mormon with a weird view on relationships and it is written from this point of view. The Dom has done this with other videos and I don't really understand where this style came from when he did so well before by just reviewing the source material and giving a small retrospective. Maybe I am knit picking but it has put me off watching future videos. I am also getting tired of twilight and I am disappointed that he has continued his twilight videos but left Game of Thrones in the dust when there is so much more to talk about.

  • There's also the fact that Carlisle was the only child of a 17th century Anglican priest (a reasonable source of a startup fund) and he didn't need to pay for food for the entire time he was a vampire, a considerable portion of the cost of living anywhere (especially before the second and third agricultural revolutions, both of which he lived through as a vampire). The stock fraud just built upon this

The fact that she's willing to turn to someone who barely tolerates her just to defend something that will definitely kill her and how absolutely creepy Rosalie was, basically acting as a perversion of a hospice nurse, midwife, and livestock farmer gave me chills. Someone please tell Meyer to stick to horror

  • I must congratulate you on the short synopsis. It was comedy gold, like so many others also stated. Aside from that: I noticed that you take insult in the way Edward and Jacob are portrayed given the fact that they're supposed to be (kinda) heroes to this story. I haven't read any of the Twilight books and don't intend to, but is it a fact that those characters are to be seen as good? I mean, take Hannibal Lecter for example. He's the hero of his stories, he's the one we're clearly out to root for, but nothing he does is in any way to be taken as "good" nor is he a role model. He's clearly a bad guy, despite the fact that he's the book's hero. Same goes for Dorian Grey. We were never supposed to LIKE him, he's just the main character, and as such, he can also be a real dick. Not every hero is a good guy, ask the Comedian.

  • You have my deepest respect and condolences for subjecting yourself to this for as long as you have, but I gotta tap out at the narration of the words "venom based fluids" repeatedly. We've crossed the line from funny to disturbing to funny again, and finally to our inevitable destination of sheer despair that after a billion years of biological evolution and 5000 years for literature to grow and flourish, our species still decided this was worth devoting a mind bending amount of effort to create and distribute, much less millions of cumulative hours reading it. This is truly the darkest timeline.

If so, I can understand why you’d be wary of being nasty. When something has been already been criticised a lot, it reaches a point where any further criticism (however intelligent and polite it might be) feels pointlessly mean.

  • Idk, I'm kinda with Edward on the whole no sex thing. I get that it isn't his call by himself, but he is literally a human killing machine, who has an insane amount of features specifically designed to hunt and kill humans. If he loses control during sex and might KILL HER, then yeah, postponing that to save her life is friggin smart. Yes, she should normally get a say, but this is way too dangerous to do so. Just because you enjoy not wearing a seat belt doesn't mean that it is unfair for the cops to forbid you from doing it- it can save her life. He really should talk to her about it and all, but consent requires both people and he clearly thinks it is too dangerous to want to continue having sex that could kill her so she should respect that as much as he should respect her if the roles were switched (as in, the human female not wanting to almost die during sex and thus not wanting to continue tempting fate by having sex, not the gender roles being flipped.)

And liked it! A lot! And its not the pretty, clean, sex of most YA. It was rough. Bella's got bruises and is walking funny. And she liked it! And the book doesn't treat her as a horrible sexual deviant for it. I really can't think of another YA novel that does that. (If you do, yes please give me recommendations)
