Event Horizon - re:View

Jay makes Mike sit down and relive a nightmare from his youth... Event Horizon. LET ME SHOW YOU!!!

  • Latin is not yet a dead language, btw, it is still spoken in one country... ;)

  • I always confuse this with “Sphere” despite seeing neither. They came out within a year of each other and I think the trailers may have been similar. I wonder if people have fond memories of Sphere and not Event Horizon or if they’ve mishmashed them in their minds. I remember seeing Sphere on TV a lot (and still never watched it), but I can’t imagine Event Horizon getting much TV air time on cable. Too much would have to be cut.

  • You all got so many of the small details wrong about this movie. It's not hard to see why you failed to see the appeal it has to many people. Also, that cut away to the Resident Evil clip is 100% accurate and relevant to Resident Evil cannon. You can think it's stupid or weird, but it's accurate.

  • Voyager used snippets from Event Horizon in the episode "Random Thoughts." Which means canonically Tuvok watched Event Horizon on movie night and it affected him greatly.

  • There's an Event Horizon level in Viscera Cleanup Detail (a game where you play a janitor cleaning up the aftermath of various fictional bloodbaths) that is pretty cool and has some creepy details.

  • I agree with Jay, this is a great candidate for a remake. The concept is interesting, mashing sci-fi with religious concepts, this whole "Hell is real" thing has been successfully done before, like Doom and the whole Warhammer 40K universe, etc. The basic premise is solid, where Event Horizon failed was the execution, mostly Anderson's terrible direction. Some scenes were comically bad, and if your audience is laughing at your horror movie, you are doing it wrong (unless you are Peter Jackson or Sam Raimi). If this was remade with a good director and better visuals, it would be great.

Event Horizon on the other hand I remembered being good because I forgot about Cooper and only really remembered the mood and Sam Neill's speeches about hell which are exceptionally well done.

But I remember liking it due to the atmosphere and the concepts, but I also remember the flaws and I remember them enough to know it probably isn't worth revisiting. • Theoritically a particle could go back in time by being draw by a black holes gravity at sufficent forces to exceed the speed of light (basically mass of the hole). I think there was something in the movie about how the drive utilizes this force somehow.

And the ship and its drive that he created, its sort of like the Frankstein and his monster, and the ship was giving him back his wife, who died because of him being distracted by his work and her depression and subsequent suicide , then he got all twisted by the corruption of his remaining sanity and mental state .. Dont understand why beardboy didn't get it.

  • They do establish that the Event Horizon's captain speaks Latin as a lark. I guess no one else was bilingual or the ship figured Latin was scary..? @Bricky Warhammer is a good reference, if they established a renewed religious movement like Christians in Space that might have made the whole Hell thing a tad more poignant. A crew that brushes off sexual innuendo and talk like truckers is gonna care about being chopped up but not so much their souls doomed to Hell.

  • I think their reactions make sense, not just because they don't have any idea about warhammer, but mainly because Mike likes a movie to have rules and Jay only really cares if a movie elicits an emotional reaction. The movie does not do much to explain the Hyperspace is Hell thing and that it's likely that's where the Christian concept of it originates. I imagine if the movie did elaborate on it, their opinions would be flipped. Jay would hate they explained it and Mike would understand the premise more because the movie did. I am much more with Mike and Rich on the 'open-ended' is bullshit opinion, but I think I was okay with Event Horizon because I knew just enough Warhammer to not need it explained.

The forces on the ship though channeling his depravity was probably just making him reflect his hubris in using his Latin.

That said, the concept would work better as a novel where you could focus more on the lore and suspense, with less of need for action scenes and silly jokes.

The whole "you only like this movie because you remember liking it as a kid" argument assumes that they haven't watched it since then. It was stupid when people used this line to disparage the original Star Wars movies while defending the prequels (and then again for the Disney crap) and it's stupid now. In this case they just like a movie that a lot of other people don't.

  • I saw "Event Horizon" when it hit theaters, and while I can't say that I enjoyed it, it did spark my desire to see a remake of "The Black Hole" (1979). Even as a kid, I thought the robots, and laser gun fights ruined the movie (because we already had Star Wars). I figured that since black holes are real, the movie should've been more frightening, serious, and grounded in science. My remake of "The Black Hole" would contain the same plot of the original; a group of people stumble upon the secret lab of a mad scientist located by the mouth of hell. Mix the gothic dread of "Event Horizon" with the grounded science of "Interstellar", and BOOM... that's what my remake of "The Black Hole" would be, pretty much.
