  • Why does the +/- stat get dogged? I think it’s significant - shows a player, line, or defensive core is playing well on both ends of the ice.

  • Name me a team that would play nearly as good as the Blues have played this year (especially as of late) with the same comparable injuries - no Parayko - # 1 shut-down Defensemen on the Team, no Schwartz - # 2 or 3 best winger on the Team, no Thomas up - and coming possibly a future Captain, no Bozak - important 3rd line Center, no Barbeshev - was a significant part of the best 4th line in the NHL? Finally, Tarasenko is coming back tonight!

  • Too many expectations the Avalanche just can't live up to. Best to let them play as the underdog and limit those expectations. It's still just 5 seasons off the atrocious 48pt season. Right now they cannot sustain a healthy roster and haven't been able to since the before the bubble. Just appreciate their talent and flashyness...and if they get to the Cup Finals well that's icing on the cake.

  • I know everyone says that the letters don’t matter, but I think it was a huuuuggeeee mistake to take the A from Kadri. It’s kinda of like saying, “thanks for playing, but your not a leader anymore.” Last year I felt like he wore it with pride and worked hard to bring the team together. This year, he looks like he’s looking over his shoulder. In a way, it seems to be a metaphor for the whole team this year. It’s just a bunch of dudes competing for their time in the ice and not a team skating and working together to try and win a cup.

  • I feel like they're fast and skillful so when thing go smoothly/"according to plan" they're fine but they're missing that intangible quality of being able to rise to that next level of mental and physical toughness is not there on a consistent level... for example, they were there for the first three games against Vegas. Then they got outplayed in the 4th game of that set and they dont seem to have bounced back from that... I'd be curious to hear you opine on this subject in general (and of course about my Avs in particular). You rock Shannon... thank you so much for being the only hockey news I need 😎

    • @RIPJimmyA7X that's what I'm hoping... I feel like these are indeed growing pains of a sort... it took the current incarnation of the Lighting several years and a first round sweep by Columbus b4 they put it all together

    • You know how a team gets that mental toughness and ability to rise to the occasion? By going through tough points and getting hit in the mouth. All of this is par for the course for a young talented super promising team, losing in game 7 2 years in a row, then coming out a little slow to start, every team goes through this when learning to be great

      RIPJimmyA7XRIPJimmyA7XUukausi sitten
  • Bednar has spent way too much time switching lines and pairings and I think its really hurt the overall chemistry of the team. Bednar has a habit I think of over thinking things sometimes instead of just staying with what works. Injuries have been really tough too as they never seem to have the whole squad of the top players together. And once again Eric Johnson gets hurt and is looking like he's gone for a long time and Francouz has been out for 2/3 of the season. Toews hasnt had the impact I expected either and looks lost on the power play a lot of times. SPEAKING OF the power play, MY GOD it is so bad and they have ran the same damn powerplay for 3 years. Like Coach, EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

  • I am a huge Avs fan and have watched every game this season. I think it's important to remember that in the 2018-19 season, when I think the Avs were at their greatest, they had 7 wins and 14 losses in December/January, before rebounding big in March and barely making the postseason, in which they throttled the Flames and took the Sharks to 7 games. The Avs do this, and while it's stressful to watch them be so hot and cold, in the end they'll still make the playoffs. I just wish they could be more consistent. It's almost like they simultaneously switch gears when the games start to really matter later in the season.

  • Grubauer has been great this year, if Francouz can come back and stay healthy I feel pretty confident with the tandem. Miska scares me as the primary backup right now though.

  • The Capitals will win it this year. With a hungry well playing Chara. A very hungry well playing ovie and the rest of the guys on board delivering the goods. A caps Stanley cup this year looks very likely. As long as the goals against is kept down they have at least as good a shot as in 2018. Colorado just are not ready yet. They need a few heartbreakers before they break through.

    Eirik RøslandEirik RøslandUukausi sitten
  • The biggest reason for the Avalanche downturn between last season and this season is that they have not had their senior defenseman for this season. Graves especially has been hurt by this change, because last year, he was always paired either with Cole or with Zadorov, both of which are more stay at home traditional defenseman, which would allow Graves to step up, and get involved in making a play deep in the offensive zone, and getting a scoring opportunity. The Avs let Zadorov go to Chicago in the off season, they traded Cole to Minnesota early on this season, and Johnson has only played in 4 games, and I don't believe he finished 2 of them due to injuries. Barberio decided just to go play in the European leagues instead of rejoining the Avs this year. Everyone that gets paired with Graves is a damn rookie. How is he supposed to do any better than he is if there is no stability in the teams defense? Girard is the most senior defenseman on the Avs right now. Honestly, I feel that the Avalanche are doing fantastically, with practically all rookies on defense, that's unheard of. The top two lines are having to play way more defensively than they are used to, while half of their defense learns how to play in the NHL, so all their stats are down. By the time the second half of the season starts, and all the young defensive players have their game set in stone, you are going to see an offensive explosion from the top two lines, as they are allowed to lay waste to their opponents, as they have in the past.

    Ian BaillieIan BaillieUukausi sitten
    • Graves was paired with Makar most of last year from what I remember, not the vets. He got so many positives just by being on the ice when Makar made plays. This year they are split up.

    • This is the biggest point at the moment. The extra attention to defense by the forwards to help soak up the lack of solid D especially from people like Compher is hurting their offensive ability. JT just wasn't looking himself the other night in the o zone. Nuke is looking quite good, more then the points would show. Not having a #1.5 goalie is also showing. It's not a bad time at all, just weathering the storm of injury and covid.

  • Life is good right now,Nugs on a win streak-just killed Milwaukee,Colorado,& Colorado St basketball look headed to th ed tourneyment,& the US government sent my tax refund money today-lol. Thinking about the Avs-will bring me back to depression...just kidding. Not like they've been a disaster,& injuries have again played a big role. But bottom line, they have underachieved so far. Frustrating part for me-& many Av fans-is some of these issues cropping up, we predicted,& pleased with them to fix. Hunter Miska just got his 1st ever win,& cuz of a light work load-actually came with 100ish seconds, of a shutout. But he also made an inexcusable mistake, on 1st goal. Flails,& dives at a harmless shot-clearly going 5 feet wide of the net. Then came very close to letting offensively challenged Arizona tie it. Which wouldve been disastrous, even had Colorado won it OT. But that's the microcosm that is the Avs goaltending situation now. They just came off having to start Michael Hutchinson in games 5-7 vs Dallas. In his defense, he exceeded our expectations, mainly cuz I had none. He wasn't great-what 3rd stringer is, but he did come within about 2 minutes, then OT-of winning 3 straight,& somehow getting an otherwise injury decimated roster, to WCF. But many of us took that as a warning, to fix the 3rd goalie. It's just bad luck, that Francouz apparently got hurt-in the last practice, before Opening night. But considering he,& Grubby-have both had injury concerns before-it's not all bad luck. Due to his inexperience,& shaky play, through 3 games-1 terrible performance,& 2 shaky performances, where we still managed a tie (OT loss),& his win-every Av fan cringes, when we must start him,& if Grubby get's hurt-knock on wood-nobodg trusts Miska-we are in big trouble-knock on wood. Any team down to their 3rd stringer in the playoffs, or for long stretches, is probably in trouble-but there were several inexpensive, experienced 3rd goalies they couldve signed-who are better than Miska,& you could give Grubby a night off-without holding your breath the whole game...bringing back Hutchinson wouldve been far better option. Also, the Avs have to have-1 of the worst bottom 6s (scoringwise)-in the NHL. Depends how you classify Donskoi,& Burakovsky. I consider Donskoi bottom 6-that's his usual spot, with a full roster, though he also moves up. Burakovsky is more a top guy to me, though he's played on 3rd line recently. But with a whole roster,& if everything is rolling-hes top 6 forward.Donskoi has been the 1 exception-with like 6 goals-he's exceeded the production we expected, so far. Burakovsky has been up,& down-but fine overall-I classify him 2nd line anyways though. But rest of the bottom 6, it's a quasi miracle, when they get on the scoreboard. Some guys, like Nichuskin,& Jost-it's much more nuanced,& complicated. Nichuskin is elite defensiveley,& on the PK. Jost is turning himself into that guy. As Av fans, we just have to come to terms, with the fact (& I have)-that Jost will never live up to 10th pick, in the draft. He's just not that guy-doesn't have enough finish. But he's greatly improved as a PK,& defensive bottom 6 guy,& that is valuable. His "process" has also been better this year, than his stats show. Having said that, whatever the reasons/excuses-ya gotta chip in occasionally-2 line offensive teams, dont often go far. Nobody expected Nichuskin to duplicate his surprising offensive output from last season-that's just gravy, & not neccessary, as great as he is defensively. But there's a reason he went multiple seasons, without a goal in Dallas-dude has hands of stone. That is an issue, those guys need to contribute more in goals/assists,& they can. Jost analytics, say he should have better stats right now, but has been somewhat unlucky. But that's also kinda who he is-great speed, not much finish. You could live with those guys struggling, if other people were pulling their weight. There have been other guys who've been surprisingly good. Without looking up these stats, I think Logan O'connor has exceeded expectations,& earned his job for now-he's a serviceable 4th liner, worst case. But Sheldon Dries has proven by now-after like 60 NHL games-he is probably not an every day NHL player. That's not his fault, he is what he is. But Sakic/Bednar-whoever, why haven't they figured out things, that seem obvious to us dumb fans. Sherwood is a similar case to me, Jason Mega also-they are fine, but probably not everyday guys...especially on a Cup contender. Injuries/COVID has been the main reason these guys are playing,& these ancillary 4th liners, aren't ggonna determine their fate in end. But that brings us to JT Comper, my #1 whipping boy. We know Comper has it in him, to be at least a decent 3rd line guy. Problem is, he hasn't been close to that guy. 1 goal just isn't getting it done-especially with his decent experience/talent. But unlike Nichusken/Jost-he isn't a consistent, elite PK guy, or defender. He isn't bad, but we need more scoring flat out. And the much more frustrating part, there seems to be no accountability from Bednar/mgt. He can't bench himself,& I'm not even saying bench him. But when we get injuries,& their 1st inclination to PROMOTE HIM-it really makes ya wonder, what game they are watching. Nobody expects him to replace McKinnon, or 1 of those top guys, when injuries/COVID hit. But he has been an unmitigated disaster, when moved up to #1PP/top line. But nobody seems to notice/care. If I see him flub a pass, miss play a perfect set up, or completely miss the net-wide open from 10 feet away on the PP-I'm gonna lose my shit. And if the Avs were say...Buffalo, Detroit, or SJ-I'd have a different view. Comper is still young enough,& talented enough, on a rebuilding team-you could let it go longer,& hope he plays himself out of it. I'm not giving up on him longterm, or saying they definitely must trade, or cut him. But there's gotta be accountability,& if it's clearly not working-stop force it. I think Comper is a wing, not center. Maybe less defensive responsibility would free him up a bit, & take off some of the pressure, that clearly is building. In very small sample sizes, the best he's looked, has been when they put him at wing, centered by Jost. Which brings me to the most frustrating part. If the Avs were rebuilding, or just not a very deep organization, I could understand this much better. Some fans want Alex Newhook brought up-no that's just dumb. That kid is gonna be a star, but another year in college (BC I think), is the right call. He MIGHT get a look, after his season is over, but I'm fine if we don't see him, til next camp. I don't trust they'll even give him a chance next team-but cross that bridge, when we get there. But right now, we have 2 guys on the practice squad, who are long over due, for a legit chance. I don't KNOW they will dominate, or even outperform these guys, but I do know they have far higher celing than the guys ahead of them,& have done more than enough at lower levels, to deserve a shot. Martin Kout,& Shane Bowers, just sit,& rot away. Kout had been injured,& not sure of his current status, but it wouldn't matter-they long ago, passed him up-giving everybody,& their brother, chance after chance. To be fair, Kout did get 1 game,& about 5 minutes ice time. He took a bad penalty,& it didn't go great. But 5 minutes isn't a fair shot,& Dries/Sherwood-both took bad penalties in their 1ST 2 GAMES-so that doesn't explain it. His ELC clock started last yr, I think-prettty sure the contract can't be used as an excuse. Bowers is probably even more confounding. Another asset from the great Duchene trade. Last I checked he was tearing up the AhL, for the Colorado Eagles,& has done everything he can, in the minors. This isn't just fan speculation/talk-many people who cover the team-say these same things on Twitter,or their podcast...but nobody in local media will ever ask Bednar or mgt. Complain about it,after/before the game-but never bring it up, in press conferences-also very frustrating. You won't get a straight answer, but at least you did your job. And sometimes it can be revealing, HOW they dodge the question. I'm not saying this would solve all their issues, or I have every answer. But it might help,& makes no sense, that these 2 rot-while the bottom 6 struggles. I heard speculation, that cuz the Eagles have a proud history,& playoff streak-maybe that plays a role. Who knows, but if that's the reason, I'm even more upset. I wish the Eagles well..hope they make the playoffs. But that's not why they exist-should be a secondary priority. Their role is to develop players,& help the Avs win-winning AHL games is secondary. If Bowers is ready,& can improve our weaknesses...the Eagles winning games, shouldn't even factor in. Avs also have arguably NHL's deepest backline, when healthy. But they are very young back there,& Byram,& Timmins have struggled as rookies should. The 1 "grizzled veteran," back there-EJ, has missed most the games. I think they've missed his intangibles, & experience as asst capitain-far more than anything on ice. Graves was a huge surprise last year, especially offensively...& has struggled with a more defensive-less prominent role-they are trying to fit him into. Certainly not time to paanic-they r in ok shape,& none of this is insurmountable. But ignoring it won't fix it,& it needs to change. Avs got a free pass in the bubble, cuz of insane injuries. But baring similar bad luck beyond their control...they need to get at least to Final 4, (haven't been there since 2002))-or the questions/pressure needs to ratchet up.

  • I think the youth and inexperience of their defence hurts them. Toews is their oldest regular at 27, and even he only has one full NHL season under his belt before this one (started the 2018-19 season in the AHL).

  • I mean they are kind of continuing the trend, underperform my expectations just a tad bit then win the up in the playoffs

  • I'm huge Avs fan, have watched every game this season and basically every season over the past 20 years. I'm honestly concerned, not just looking at the stats, record, whatever. This team has looked just, completely out of sync, flat, and almost every game has been a slog. Outside of 3-4 games they haven't really been the fast, sharp, skilled team I remember. Lots of floating, lots of no skating.. even the games the Avs won a lot were rough, ugly, one goal games where you'd think they'd really be able to blow the team out. We have our head coach going out nearly every loss and calling out "passengers" and complaining about effort but nothing changes. I don't know at what point you start benching the "passengers" or start to have to make moves for them to go. Also I've lost a lot of faith in our bottom six. Watch the Vegas series, they get absolutely bullied for a lot of their shifts against Vegas's bottom six. It's just they don't do anything in particular well. You know Vegas has a line that's just hard hitting, physical, you know they're not going to put the puck in the net but they might get the boys going with a big hit or an energy shift. The Avs bottom six has nearly ZERO offensive skill and nearly ZERO grit/size/energy. Calvert being an exception, and fuck it hurts to say but I don't think he can provide that this year with his concussions either. Compher and Bellemare have been useless, and maybe one of them would be fine on the 4th line but we've basically got two underperforming 4th line centers. I will give props to Jost, he's been defensively fantastic this season, great on the PK, but his linemates haven't done anything. Nuke, I don't know what to make of it. Last season, even when the Avs were playing poorly I could almost always spot Nuke on the ice doing SOMETHING, whether that was just a hard forecheck, turnover, or something he always brought insane energy and I haven't seen that as much this year either.

    • Too many words. Nathon looks like he has aged 7 years in 1. where is the speed? Where is the s accuracy in his shot? He isn’t able to get the puck off his stick like last year.

    • I thought O’Connor was playing great as a bottom 6 guy bringing energy and he’s barely played since Compher and Calvert returned. He should be playing over Compher and Bellemare

  • No matter what all of you said about who the best teams are prior to the season starting, I still think a completely healthy Blues team is better than Colorado. I still even believe that with the way the Blues have been playing lately. Think the consistency is starting to get there.

  • Graves may be struggling this year, but much of their team's success on the penalty kill has to do with him. He plays more on the kill than any of their other defensemen (i.e. leading the team with 62:52 SH TOI so far this season, Toews being next with 46:18).

  • We’ll see how it goes. I did expect more from Colorado, but it’s not the end of the world. Tampa struggled in the first half last year too so they could still make a run. But another game like Monday’s could be a bit troubling

  • As an avs fan I don’t think it’s time to panic, something that I think will help them is that they are getting everyone’s best, looks rough right now and they have to work on some things but that will help them in the long run.

  • Last year the Avs had the best 5v5 scoring in the league and right now they're bottom 10. They had good depth scoring but this season only Donskoi is the consistent producer in the bottom 6. MacKinnon was a top 3 player last season but I wouldn't even consider him top 10 this season. Last season Avs also had the issue of not being able to make a comeback either. The difference was they usually put up considerable leads. Compher has with out a doubt been the worst Avs player this season. Graves isn't as good as last season but the other thing to consider is that he isn't playing with Makar like last season, he has been put on the third pairing with much weaker d-men. The offensive output of the team has regressed considerably. The most consistent players on the team have been Girard, Toews and Makar when he isn't injured.

  • They are on their cup run years but the next few years. They need to get by the other top teams making a run but they have the right age talent and desire to get to the big show dont know if they can cross the line and win it all but they are in the running at least.

  • Unfortunately, the players are made of glass. Makar has been out with an injury again and Calvert spends more time injured than healthy. Seriously, they didn't play for 14 days due to COVID restrictions and first game back, Makar was out with an injury and couldn't dress. He played the last game before the stoppage and was fine. How do you get hurt sitting around?

  • Yeah offense has been a big issue this year. There doesn't seem to be a killer instinct. A couple of times this year theyve started great but been unable to put teams away and its bit them in the ass. It's been frustrating for sure. The other thing is they're playing in a pretty defense-first division. Its rare a team tries to play a fast game against the Avs its almost a guarantee they'll get burned. You're seeing a lot of stacking up on the blue line, clogging up the neutral zone and really playing in a way that discourages the rush, which is the Avs bread and butter. I would like for them to have figured out how to beat this style by now but it is what it is. Its way harder to adjust to rush dynamics in my mind than simple in-zone stuff. It's just something they have to figure out. What bothers me most is the sloppy play, it seems like this team is just waiting for the playoffs at times, and as a fan seeing that is just so frustrating

  • With everything said, do you think it's a coaching issue? They aren't playing badly, but they aren't playing at the level they should be. I've noticed when they play physical, finishing checks, standing guys up, they play their best. It doesn't seem like it's the coach's style of play for the team. Teams play physical against the Av's and they can't/don't respond.
