Tube Frame Fabrication - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Project Ep.6

275 718 Näkymät

Latest video:
Beginning of the steel tube frame / chassis fabrication.
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

  • Awesome project, cant wait to see it run. Are both of your Diffs from rear wheel drive cars? I built a cart in the past and I had to invert the front diff to get it to output in same direction as rear. I welded a nut on the top (now bottom) of front diff for a drain and just measured the amount of 90w oil I put in it. worked great. Its always funny how people want to build carts out of new "go cart" parts when there is surplus auto parts all over the place that are better and cheaper.

  • Although i prefer the actual 4x4 system, i would've chosen a suzuki vitara, why? For a cheap build, then a 1.9 tdi and bam, done, how do you measure if your cuts are correct, and welds?

    • I'm sorry to hear that. This 4x4 project has cost me 535€ in new ATV tires and 140€ in steel and 100€ in four new shocks so far. The donor car was free. Additional expenses will be the new axles and other old and crappy rolling chassis parts I want to replace (new control arms (bushings are bad), brake rotors, ball joints etc.). But no worries, you'll do another project in the future. 💪

      Donn DIYDonn DIY9 päivää sitten
    • @Donn DIY there were 3 of us so we were doing 3cars which in hine sight was way to ambiguous we brought the first frame made up but had trouble with the company doing it as they didnt do what was asked of them so we wasted 2 months redoing it. 2 of us ended up with rolling chassis the third all the parts to build a third,we put 3k in each and not got a finished result. I need to sell my rolling chassis as shirt on cash now

      Andy EllisAndy Ellis11 päivää sitten
    • The most expensive parts in this build are currently the new ATV tires. In addition I bought the tube material. But the main car parts (engine, rims, struts, hubs, control arms, steering racks etc.) I got for free. So I hope it will be somewhat of a reasonably priced project. I'm sorry to hear that you ran out of funds and only that is keeping you from building the buggy.

    • I have a rough sketch and things I wanna feature in a build and then I figure things out as I go. I build from the perspective of parts and material, not blueprints - I build around what I have rather than planning up front and buying parts to satisfy the blueprints. This gives me freedom to change things as I go and not to commit to anything. It is creative freedom for me. 😉

  • Once again very impressed. I do like how you set up the diffs and worked around them building to fit your trailer. The size of this should be about that of a youth side by side, yet it will be much stronger. Very impressed by the way you bolted the diffs on as well. Now just make sure when you build the front and back to make those bumpers bolt on. This will give you the option to build attachment mounts for some sort of electric hydraulics for either a snow blade or some sort of brush sickle cutter or some other sort of attachment one might need when running around the farm.

  • Hi. In order for the front differential to turn in the opposite direction you can either turn the front differential upside down or switch the gear internally. I do not know if your differential has the space internally to allow that. I do not know who made them or your transfer case. This interests me greatly. Thanks for your time.

  • I don't understand that chop saw. It looks too expensive for what it does, and everyone else is cutting material way faster with those Evolution style chop saws with a metal blade.

    Patrick BaitmanPatrick Baitman14 päivää sitten
    • The coolant and blade will last far longer and cut cleaner and true at a slower rate. Might take longer yet you will pay less in the long run. The evolution saw cuts about 1/2 the speed or there about as a wood chop saw. I can make 5 cuts with a rough cut wood blade on stainless steel tubes 1.5" round 1/8 thick any cuts after that become harder and starts friction burns and is dull. So far I have made about 24 cuts and still can use the blade to cut wood, yet I do know that it is very dull yet does not burn the wood for the rough cuts I need. I needed to cut some commercial legs down to size for my kitchen sink and commercial equipment table.

  • About beefing up your threads: welding some tubes into the square tubes ( direkt translation of the german word: Vierkantrohr ) makes it more load resistant. Maybe welding thick tubes into the square tubes gives you more beefiness than you need to have insanely stabile threads :-D I can't wait to see what you build this time and BIG THANKS to your wife/girlfriend which supports you AND lets you build all this.
