Why Albon's F1 struggles at Red Bull are now becoming critical

Alex Albon has one of the toughest jobs in Formula 1 - team-mate to Max Verstappen. But Red Bull hasn't signed him to beat its superstar driver, it just needs him to be a strong back-up, much like Valtteri Bottas does for Mercedes. However, so far Albon has not been able to string it all together, and with some very strong alternatives waiting in the wings from outside the Red Bull family, and the team yet to confirm he will stay on for 2021, Albon is running out of time to make a claim for the seat in the long-term.

  • Each car in each team should be tailored to the in visual driver, not the best performing driver, Ricciardo saw this and left.

  • The problem with the team and car is everything is tailored to max, it’s not Aston Martin red bull racing, it’s Max verstapen red bull racing. Helmut even admitted that the cars are not identical, there is no support for Alex, only pressure to lose his identity and flourish, and instead he must become Max

  • Gasly did so much better in a more neutral car after Red Bull replaced him and so will Albon if he is dropped. The car is built for Max and Albon is not Max. Danny Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz have flourished away from the toxic culture that is Red Bull.

Maybe Alex is a second slower than Max but Max is a second faster than Lewis and Valtteri, there’s no way of knowing. At least F2 is giving us some exciting racing this year, it’s just a pity they’re not there every F1 weekend.

  • Albon is SO far off of Verstappen that it's not even a competition, I know Verstappen is fast, but averaging at least 0.5seconds down on him in qualifying is simply not the sort of thing that can be overcome. Frankly I think we need to start looking at Ricciardo's speed a bit more, because he pushed and beat and fought tooth and nail with Verstappen who is, in my opinion now the fastest driver on the grid. I think it goes Verstappen, Hamilton, Ricciardo then I can't tell you who is faster between Bottas or LeClerc, then just below them are Lando, Perez & Vettel. I remember Verstappen complaining after Daniel left that he felt he was struggling because he didn't have Daniel there to push him, to fight him.

    Paddy McPaddy McUukausi sitten
  • I read once that “he’s been thrown into the deep end a bit too soon”. I totally agree, he was moved to one the top teams after just half a year behind the wheel of an F1 car. While that may seem impressive, I think Red Bull should’ve signed him for 2020 not in the middle of 2019, let him get comfortable in the car first. Or were they just fed up with Pierre Gasly’s performance and felt like they had to replace him quickly if they want to be at the top again? I’m a new follower of F1, so I’m not too sure. 2020 is my first season. I hope Albon does get to show what he’s made off, cause he’s currently my favourite driver. He is down to earth, super capable and dare I say it, has quite a sweet personality...

  • Red bull as a team aren't skilled enough to build cars for more than one driver. Everything they do revolves around Verstappen. There is just not enough "room". They need to look at other variables than the driver.

Brian Tanyous RasmussenBrian Tanyous RasmussenUukausi sitten
  • I dont think Red Bull is a top 2 car. Verstappen is in a league close to Hamilton and he is making the car look better than it is. Gasly is proving his talent again this season but couldnt do anything in the Red bull last. I think the car is overrated.

  • Must admit, to me, the real problem at Red Bull is the Marko scenario. To him, drivers are just tools. If Albon goes, then that's 2 drivers in a row. Something adrift at Red Bull, and it's not really to do with Albon, or, last year, Gasly.

  • the real problem is Red Bull gushed out Gasly too early. If Gasly kept the RB seat, Alex wouldnt be in this much pressure, and Gasly maybe able to let out the very best part of him. Remember Alex's a rookie last year, performing relatively well with STR but Marko and Christian were too impatient with Gasly and made the switch. It made a chaotic ambience inside the two teams. And made the mental of the second drivers down. As much as I love RB, the way Marko and Christian manage the second driver is absolutely unremarkable. The system needs to be changed. Red Bull should be about orbiting young exciting talents, not killing the mentality of young upcoming drivers.

  • I have a theory that Max is a huge psychological threat to his team mate/mates. Look at his last relationship with Ricciardo when they were on the same team. Ricciardo left for a number of reasons but I suspect partially because max was an a/hole to him. Gasly performed well in toro roso then when he drove on the same team as verstappen he started to fail miserably. Even Ocon was performing reasonably when starting at red bull. Now he’s terrible. I suspect max is a psychopath and mentally wears down his own teammates. Although he is an unbelievable driver he may also be a detriment to his own team

Red Bull have always treated their second drivers like crap,

  • Same comments were pointed at Gasly in 2019. The Red Bull development program has given us top drivers in both F1 and F2. They are all fast and talented drivers. There are no "weak" drivers from RB program. Max is the "outlier" here. His performance has been superb.

  • First of all, Red Bull needs to learn how to nurture their 2nd driver. Building confidence in these drivers is fundamental and they tend to ruin driver after driver in both teams (RB and also formerly Toro Rosso). Drivers like Buemi, Gasly, Albon, and even Ricciardo were crushed under too much pressure, unfairly. Sainz was lucky to find a decent drive before the pressure would also catch him on.

  • In my opinion Redbull tries so hard to find a Verstappen V2 instead of developing a car that both drivers can actually drive well. How hard is it to give focus to the second driver and develop them instead of trying to replace them every year. Ricciardo would probably still be in RB if they gave him his fair share and Im not speaking just monetarily, he gave them a lot of glory and just look at how they treated him. RB is a great team but they love Verstappen so much that they have no vision.

    no_xqccno_xqccUukausi sitten
  • It's not that he can't compete with Verstappen, no one really expects that. But he should be cruising to a 4th place finish in every race due to the superiority of the RedBull over the rest of the field. Were Ricciardo still in Red Bull this season would be a lot more interesting/exciting.

  • I'm 50/50 on Alex Albon Red Bull via Marko has said that he hasn't received the same equipment as Verstappen, I have enjoyed his overtakes and last year in the Red Bull he looked good. This year the car is tricky to drive even Max says this but the best drivers will always get the best from the car and he hasn't deliveries. Albon's last race he looked terrible all though he was decent in qualifying, the thing is Red Bull know exactly what they are getting from him (I've even heard he brings some money into Red Bull) wheres Segio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg are good drivers are they really what Red Bull want? I've read an article that George Russell's Williams drive for next year is under threat from Segio Perez, well what if Red Bull look at him as the replacement? he could be a better option than Albon and the other drivers I have mentioned and might be quite cheap, I bet a quid Mercedes wouldn't block this move either... makes sense to me if Red Bull decide enough is enough of Albon. (Sorry Alex Albon I like you but it you've gotta buck your ideas up fella)

  • I think the most telling thing here is Albon was impressive last year in both teams. Everyone thought he was the right fit. Now we have hit a stumbling block and people want him out. How many chances has Grosjean had? How many cars did Max bin in the beginning? No one arrives in F1 the finished product, Albon came with no testing experience or young driver opportunities and Red Bull knew that. He didn’t lose all of last year’s talent overnight so take the time, find the problem. I think what I’m struggling to accept the most is Norris being so open at the beginning of the year, saying he wasn’t coping last year, he couldn’t connect all the dots, lost confidence, was too soft and McLaren turned round and said what can we do to help. Look what they have got out of him this year with that approach. Is this not an option for Red Bull for Albon and even Gasly?

    dizzyduck44dizzyduck44Uukausi sitten
    • Most people don’t want to acknowledge his great results of last year and quite impressive results earlier in the year being in contention for podiums in 2 races. People expect a Ricky Carmichael or Hamilton when in reality those athletes are special BECAUSE of their scarcity in talent. If every driver had one driving style it’d minus well be a spec series. Albon is a driving a car that you need confidence in with the slightest bit of doubt can cause you to bin it.

The car yes it's different from Max's and going to be slower. This leads to less time comfortable on the track on Friday Qualifying is now impacted resulting in him being slower. As we have seen one position in qualifying can be the difference between 3rd or 6th. You have the classic your the number two issue as well. This means you test the parts. You test the strategy's like running hards just to find out they are shit. Really hope alex pulls through though.
