  • Last time I checked, the "bulkier but slower" storage was mostly 3.5" drives, because fitting more than 1TB of spinning rust in a 2.5" drive is kinda hard. So I think the split between 2.5" and 3.5" backplanes is here to stay.

  • having an easy drop in solution like this is gonna make home rack nas setups so much easier. Currently almost everything out there either relies on the person knowing pretty intimately the storage & raid protocols of what they want to do, or following a sketchy guide from 5 years ago telling them to buy an exact model & revision of an HBA set up exactly as their guide says. The amount of customers i've helped that had a raid card instead of an HBA, or a sata expansion HBA rather than a SAS HBA. or the worst of all, having bought a number of SAS drives because they found them for cheaper not knowing there setup couldn't use them at all. TLDR ; this is gonna be good for datacenters. And HUGE when the price depreciates greatly and we can get them new/second hand cheaply for home nas setups, as currently unless you know exactly what you're doing, you NEED to follow a guide and buy exactly what it says or you'll have a bad time.

  • Why have a U.3 with PCIe 4.0 rated at 6,900 MB/s just to bottleneck it on a U.3/ SAS connectors whatever the argument instead of just going for a x8 PCIe 4.0 backplane theoretically doubling that x4 PCIe NVMe throughput and eliminating the SAS ports now that the you have such many PCIe 4.0 lanes and threads on those EPYCs?

  • I enjoy Linus Tech Tips for their Gaming computers and end user "work" videos. But the business/server/networking videos scare me. Granted they could be silly videos trying to bridge the gap between the gaming community and server community. But the justifications are just wrong. In a single server set up software raid is junk compared to a raid card. In this video "This server has dual Epic 64 core CPUs...." congrats you have at least $2000 in CPUs to have slower raid performance than a $300 raid card. The only situations where software raid is better than hardware raid is when you're making storage clusters with multiple servers clustered together to make one single logical entity, to provide backend storage to other servers. Otherwise you're spending money in the wrong places to "save money and have greater performance". I know having a universal connector for desktop gaming computer would be nice or flexible for upgrades but the business world doesn't care. When businesses refresh their server infrastructure (or part of the infrastructure) The IT department and/or with consults figure out what performance metrics then need plus room for growth. Then they go to dell, hpe, etc and say "what solutions do have for X" and pick one. Every business is going to buy that hardware with a service contract. So when a hard drive dies they call the vendor and say "server Y has a failed drive, send me a new one" No one cares about the connector on the drive at any point in this process. Also the most cringe worthy point is Hotswap on server was never intended to make hard drives act as flash drives. It was intended for when a drive fails, you can take it out and replace it without having to shutdown the server and take line of business applications offline.

  • You can take out one of the PCIe brackets and run the cables through an unused PCIe slot out the back. This way the chassis's cover can fit. I've done this with a few Poweredge servers. Running it through an empty PCIe slot, not only look better but will shut up the fans and let you keep the unit to 1U.
